How to Survive a Home Renovation

How to Survive a Home Renovation

18th Aug 2022

We all know home renovations are no simple task. It’s stressful to have strangers come into your house and make permanent changes to the place you call home. However, there are a few tips and tricks that can help make the entire process go a bit more smoothly, from choosing the right builders, to fitting your flooring at the correct time. Follow along to discover how to complete any home renovation project with ease!

Plan ahead

Leaving yourself ample time to plan for a home renovation will avoid many headaches during the process. Firstly, you’ll want to start looking for contractors in advance to secure their availability. Obtain quotes from different contractors and have a realistic budget in mind from the outset. You'll want to work with a builder who understands your vision and is keen to work with your aspirations. Ask to see their portfolio, check out other customer reviews and follow them on social media to really gain a sense of the projects they have previously worked on.

By scheduling a date for your project early, you’ll have time to prepare your home and get all of your ducks in a row before your house becomes infiltrated with workers, tools, and materials.

Shop online

Shopping online is a great way to make the renovation process easier on you and your family. Instead of going to stores in person, which can take up a lot of your day and often don’t have the selection you need, you can do a simple online search and find hundreds of results. Sourcing your materials online also has the advantage of saving you money, since online prices are almost always cheaper. For example, buying engineered wood flooring or carpet online allows you to find options that fit your desired look and budget in seconds! On a larger project, these savings will soon add up.

Declutter and hide valuables

Before the project starts, it’s essential to declutter your home and hide any valuables you wouldn’t want to get damaged or misplaced. Decluttering allows your contractors to get to the areas of the home they need more efficiently, letting them complete the project quicker and get out of your hair. Hiding valuables is important because, even if you’ve chosen the best contractor in your area, accidents happen, and it’d be a shame to lose any item that’s important to you during a renovation.

Update your home in order

Speaking of accidents, it’s important to update your home in the correct order to avoid damages and also make your project run as smoothly as possible. For example, you wouldn’t want to get brand new laminate flooring before having your interior walls painted, since you run the risk of getting paint droplets on your brand new wood flooring. Typically, it is recommended to renovate in this order:

  • Structural Issues
  • Building work
  • Carpentry
  • Electrics
  • Plastering
  • Painting
  • Flooring

Schedule childcare activities and pet sitters

It can be very frustrating, both for you and the contractor, to have toddlers or pets running around while building work is underway, the decorators are painting, or the floor fitters are trying to install your new laminate flooring or wood flooring. It can also be a safety hazard. So it’s best to arrange lots of activities to get the family out of the house! Or if you need to be around to manage the project, arrange childcare and find a reliable pet sitter to enable you the space and time you will need to make all of those important decisions.

Choose the right season

Some projects, like window and door replacement, exterior painting, and others, are weather sensitive. You may have to open the doors and windows to your home, which can be quite uncomfortable during the frigid months. To avoid this, plan ahead and schedule your project for the appropriate season.
