Clever Ways to Use Colour in Your Home

Clever Ways to Use Colour in Your Home

8th Jul 2022

If you’re new to the world of interior design, finding clever ways to incorporate colour into your home can prove quite the challenge. However, finding the perfect colour scheme for your home, and the right places to showcase it, can instantly make your DIY design appear as if it was created by a professional. Keep reading to discover simple ways to incorporate colour into your home.

Wall Colour

The most obvious, and easiest, way to incorporate colour into your home is by painting the walls. Whether you’re a bright and bold person, or prefer something more subdued, wall colours can change the entire tone of a room.

When it comes to choosing the perfect wall colour for your home, you first need to consider the elements in the room that aren’t changing. For example, you may have recently installed engineered wood flooring or have a couch you love and don’t want to get rid of. Be sure that the wall colour you’re selecting compliments these elements, since they aren’t as easily changed as a rug or décor piece.

Once you’ve narrowed down your options to just a few prospective wall colours, try painting swatches on a white backdrop, as the current colour of the walls would change how the new ones appear, and hang them up for at least 24 hours. It’s important to see how each colour looks at different times of day. You may love the way a colour appears in direct sun, but dislike it when the sun starts to set.

To maintain consistency in your home, try limiting yourself to no more than 3 or 4 wall colours. This typically includes a neutral colour for large living areas, and a few accent colours for bedrooms, bathrooms, or a home office.

Throw Pillows

Pillows and soft furnishings are a wonderful way to include more colour in your home design, because they’re inexpensive and easy to rotate, if you’re someone who frequently changes their style. Simply swapping decorative pillow cases or throw blankets can completely change the colour scheme of a room.

Flooring Accents

Many people forget to consider flooring as an option for incorporating colour into your home. However, you can make some bold colour statements with the flooring you choose. A very trendy choice right now is to have light, natural wood floors, engineered wood flooring, or click-vinyl flooring to serve as a neutral backdrop for fun accent rugs and runners.

An area rug does a wonderful job at grounding a room and providing a strong base for whatever colour scheme you may choose. Engineered wood flooring, laminate flooring, and click-vinyl flooring are all cost-effective options that allow you to create a sleek and modern look in your home, while still letting the desired colours be the stars of the show.

Décor Pieces

Another lovely way to bring colour and personality to your interior design is through décor. Stylish pieces like candles, picture frames, coffee table books, vases, and other tchotchke in your desired colour scheme really add up. Like soft furnishings, they’re easily replaceable if you’re looking for a colour change, and they make any room look more put together and sophisticated.
